What Size Is a Twin, Queen or King Quilt? Dimensions in Inches

A twin quilt is 63–70 × 86–90 in and a queen 84–90 × 92–108 in. Sourced sizes for every bed, twin to California king, with the drop behind each.

Illustration: three folded quilts stacked from large to small, in indigo checks, mustard stripes and red pinwheel triangles, beside a ruler on a green cutting mat.
Across four quilting sources, a twin quilt is 63–70 × 86–90 in, a queen 84–90 × 92–108 in and a king 102–110 × 95–108 in.

The ranges come from our size chart’s four sources: Quilting Daily, Fat Quarter Shop, Missouri Star and Suzy Quilts. For your own mattress, use the quilt size calculator. The drop, how far a quilt hangs past the mattress top at each side and the foot, explains much of why sources differ, along with mattress size and extra length (our analysis). Other charts give larger and smaller sizes for every bed, including floor-length bedspreads; each section names examples, not every outlier.

Inches, width × length. Mattresses: Sleep Foundation. *Twin XL: Quilting Daily’s PDF chart and Suzy Quilts; Quilting Daily’s web chart pairs a 39 × 76 mattress with 70 × 90. California king: Quilting Daily, Missouri Star and Suzy Quilts. Suzy Quilts says its sizes “are approximate” and can vary by 4 to 8 in; Fat Quarter Shop labels its sizes “Example Quilt Size.”

Our math: the last column uses one 15 in drop at the sides and foot, the Coverlet setting (a coverlet covers the mattress top and sides). A pillow tuck, extra length for the pillows, adds to the length only. How to size a quilt explains the drops.

What size is a twin quilt?

63–70 × 86–90 in. Sleep Foundation’s twin mattress is 38 in wide; Quilting Daily, Fat Quarter Shop and Missouri Star’s twin guide use 39 in (Missouri Star’s chart uses 38), so measure yours. On a 38 × 75 mattress (our math):

  • Fat Quarter Shop’s example quilt, 63 × 87 in, hangs 12½ in over each side, with 12 in of extra length.
  • Missouri Star’s 68 × 86 hangs “15" sides · 11" foot,” its queen guide says. The table’s calculator figure is 4 in longer, because the calculator uses the same drop at the foot.
  • Quilting Daily’s 70 × 90, also Suzy Quilts’ approximate size, hangs 16 in over each side, with 15 in of extra length.

Outside these ranges: floor-length bedspreads at 80 × 108 (Sylvia’s Quilt Depot) and 81 × 106 (Superior Threads). Sylvia’s older chart, from before it “increased” its sizes for thicker mattresses, starts at 56 in wide.

What size is a twin XL quilt?

70 × 95 in, for a 38 × 80 mattress (5 in longer than a twin mattress). A 70 in width is a 16 in drop, which the calculator turns into 70 × 96, 1 in longer, since it uses 16 in at the foot too (our math). Outside these ranges: Sylvia’s bedspread, 80 × 113, and its comforter, 66 × 94.

What size is a full quilt?

78–85 × 87–108 in, for a 54 × 75 mattress. The size chart page’s full answer gives each source’s drop. Outside these ranges: bedspreads at 96 × 106 (Superior Threads) and 96 × 108 (Sylvia’s).

Queen size quilt dimensions in inches

84–90 × 92–108 in, on a 60 × 80 mattress; work out your own queen. The size chart page compares each source’s queen and its drop. Outside these ranges:

  • Missouri Star’s own queen guide says queen quilts “generally measure between 90 to 100 inches wide and 95 to 110 inches long,” and that most measure 90 × 90 to 100 × 108 in. Missouri Star’s two ranges differ on length (95–110 vs 90–108). At 100 in wide, a queen hangs 20 in over each side (our math), near floor length.
  • Bedspreads: 102 × 112 (Superior Threads) and 102 × 113 (Sylvia’s).
  • Smaller: Sylvia’s older chart, from 76 in wide.

Our math: at 102 in wide, a queen hangs 21 in over each side, the “Standard drop from the top of the bed to the floor” that J&O Fabrics gives. Missouri Star’s larger queens are quilts, not bedspreads.

What size is a king quilt?

102–110 × 95–108 in, on a 76 × 80 mattress (our math):

  • Fat Quarter Shop’s example, 102 × 102, hangs 13 in over each side, with 22 in of extra length.
  • Quilting Daily’s and Missouri Star’s 108 × 95 hangs “16" sides · 15" foot,” says Missouri Star. Quilting Daily’s PDF chart puts the king at 78 in wide (its web chart uses 76 in), which makes 108 in a 15 in drop.
  • Suzy Quilts’ approximate 110 × 108 hangs 17 in over each side.

To match the 108 × 95, a 16 in drop gives 108 × 96, 1 in longer, since the calculator uses 16 in at the foot too.

Outside these ranges: bedspreads at 118 × 113 (Sylvia’s) and 120 × 112 (Superior Threads), and Sylvia’s comforter, 104 × 94.

What size is a California king quilt?

102–106 × 100–112 in, on a 72 × 84 mattress. The mattress is 4 in narrower and 4 in longer than a king’s, so at the same drop the quilt is too (our math). Quilting Daily and Missouri Star change more, from a 108 × 95 king to 102 × 100.

Missouri Star lists “15" sides · 16" foot.” A 15 in drop plus 1 in of pillow tuck gives 102 × 100; the 1 in stands in for the longer foot drop.

Outside these ranges: Sylvia’s bedspread, 114 × 117, and comforter, 100 × 98.

Living Spaces, a furniture retailer that sells quilts, calls its sizes “approximate.” Sleep Foundation, an ad-supported sleep-product site, charts comforters.

Our analysis: twin, full and queen largely overlap. Both store-bought charts list twin XL at 86–92 in long, against the quilting sources’ 95 in. King and California king comforters start 12 in narrower than the quilting range, and Living Spaces’ California king is 8 in shorter.

Many comforters “come in varying widths and lengths to accommodate beds of different profiles,” says Sleep Foundation.

What size quilt should I buy for a queen bed? Our advice: look for about 84–90 × 92–108 in, the quilting range, and go by the listed inches, not the label. If a quilt you own already fits, take its width × length straight to the backing calculator.

Common mistakes

Next: backing, binding and the top

Open your bed’s figure in the size table. The buttons under the result carry the size to the backing and binding calculators, and “Show the math” shows each step. Backing is the fabric on the back; binding is the strip that finishes the edges. Example: the twin’s backing. For a shrinkage allowance, see the size chart page. Plan the top with the fabric yardage calculator.

FAQ

What size quilt is 72 × 90?

It falls between the sources’ twin (up to 70 in wide) and full (from 78 in) sizes, and it fits a full with a 9 in drop (our math). On a 54 × 75 full, a 9 in drop and a 6 in pillow tuck give exactly 72 × 90, the 6 in being extra length at the head.
